Jaundice is a medical condition marked by the yellowing of the skin, and it is typically caused by liver disease, liver failure, and certain forms of cancer. It may also be caused by the blockage of the biliary tract, and it typically begins with the yellowing of the whites of the eyes before spreading to the skin. There is also a variant of the condition known as neonatal jaundice, which affects infants in the days following their birth; typically, neonatal jaundice clears up on its own after about two weeks. In adults, the treatment of jaundice depends on its cause; it usually responds to treatment of the underlying condition.
