Ahhhhhh, you fall asleep in a perfectly temperate bedroom. The bedclothes and sheets are not too heavy or too light for the season. However, when you wake up you’re literally drenched in sweat. Perspiring as you sleep is common, but then there’s hot flashes that occur during sleep that are totally unrelated to you overheating during the night. While there are many common causes of night sweats—including menopause or the taking of certain prescription drugs like antidepressants—you don’t fall under any of these categories.
So what the heck is going on?
1. Look to your Medications
Antidepressants and psychotic drugs are commonly linked to causing night sweats. However, there are other seemingly innocent medications known for turing the temperature up on your nighttime slumber as well.
According to a 2003 study published by the AmericanFamilyPysician.org, even over-the-counter medications can trigger night sweats. The study reports that “…antipyretics [such as] acetaminophen and aspirin are cited as causes of night sweats…[due to] a rebound effect as the antipyretic effects subside.
